Forge Welded Integral Guard Knife
Hope you enjoyed this video, this will be my last video for a while, as I will be in Finland for the next little while.
This blade is 80crv2 with homemade paper micarta and bronze spacers, with a stabilized willow handle. Unfortunately i got a weld failure on one side of the guard during heat treat which means I will not be selling this knife. The crack is pretty minor so I did finish the knife out anyways and I am pretty happy with it otherwise. Thanks for watching and I look forward to being back and able to make videos again.

Making Carving Knives

This is a forge I picked up a while back, I was told it came from the Yukon- White Pass railroad station which is neat. Overall the blower was in good condition, but I did have to do some clean up and forge a few parts for the rest of the forge. There are still plenty of things I could clean up more, or remake like the wooden handle, but for the time being it works perfectly and a little extra ...

A little more manageable than my normal choppers which usually have a 10-15" blade. Im a new smith still learning a lot. Something that really caught my eye was the way you forged that tip....i saw you hit the tip over the side of the anvil. Ive noticed some other smiths do that when forging sickles. I was wondering what advantages that technique offers? Where you isolating the tip so it didnt get drawn out further? Id love to know!

    • @LiamJPenn

      By keeping the tip right at the edge of the anvil I can forge all the way down to a point without striking the anvil with my hammer

    • @elirobertson2324
      @elirobertson2324 18 дней назад

      @@LiamJPenn I see! So it's made thinner on the edge and side of the anvil rather than the main surface as to not mark the anvil. It looks like the odd hook sort of shape the tip takes after doing that is blended back in to the rest of the blade after. Correct me if I'm wrong! I appreciate the reply!

    • @LiamJPenn
      @LiamJPenn 18 дней назад

      @@elirobertson2324 The tip gets forged so the blade curves towards the edge side, that way when the bevels are forged, and the edge material stretches, the blade curves back to straight. otherwise the blade would get banana shaped after forging bevels which is a little trickier to fix. @@LiamJPenn makes total sense. I've seen a few smiths doing that and I didn't quite understand it at the time. It's getting more cemented in my brain now. Mostly seen japanese smiths use that technique...rather than breaking flow and trying to control where the whole mass of steel is going the whole time. Thanks so much for your generous time. I'll certainly watch the video too.

    Nice use of the herb chopper! Similar idea to a head knife (only much thicker with a stouter bevel on the edge) and an Uluit (traditional Inuit knife, used for skinning, scraping, leather and chopping meat, vegetables and herbs). If you’re interested in an Uluit avoid the highly decorated stainless steel variety-search out RUclips videos on how to make one from an old (vintage, spring steel) saw using cold cutting with a chisel, vise and a towel, then shaping with a file. You can make yourself a beautiful leatherworking tool!

    Hey, im starting to venture into knife making and a friend asked for a whittling knife, I normally just make my knifes out of 1075 steel because they don't have to be as sharp, what steels would you recommend for a novice like me to make a whittling knife? Im try to find the 52100 that you used but I cant find it In a thin stock And Im only cutting and shaping stock, I haven't forged anything yet because I don't have a anvil yet

    Hey how much oxygen are you letting in through the burners? Im trying to forgeweld in a cast master forge and I want to make sure the forge is the right environment.

    • @LiamJPenn
      @LiamJPenn 2 месяца назад

      I don’t have a ton of experience with Venturi burner forges, but you will want to adjust it until you have enough heat and there is a solid amount of flame or “dragons breath” coming out the front of the forge. This is a sign that most of the oxygen is being burnt out from inside the forge, hence fuel needs to come outside the forge to burn. Having too much oxygen will scale your steel up and make forge welding much harder. Keep in mind if you turn the air down too much you will get big yellow flames, and that’s not what you want.

    Could you go more in depth about the forge weld? I have been having a lot of trouble getting mine to stick

    • @LiamJPenn
      @LiamJPenn 3 месяца назад

      Most important things are getting clean, flat surfaces, getting good even heat and soaking at temperature for a bit(soak time will depend on welding temp and material thickness mainly) as well as having the right environment in your forge. If you are using a gas forge, make sure it is adjusted so that you have a decent amount of flame coming out the front of the forge, this is an indicator that all the oxygen is being burned out inside the forge, so fuel has to come outside the forge to combust(making your steel less prone to oxidizing). Flux also helps a lot. I generally use normal borax.

    Folded axes are inherently difficult to forge weld. I think if your gas forge got to hotter temps you’d have an easier time of it. Another option is to use a solid fuel forge to get large masses of steel to forge welding temperatures.

    • @thesixfootsixblacksmith4772
      @thesixfootsixblacksmith4772 4 месяца назад

      Mild steel is difficult to forge weld together and is much more finicky than say quality wrought iron, which you can get much hotter without burning. You’ve got the skills to forge weld, but maybe your gas forge doesn’t get hot enough. Hard to tell from the video the temp of your work. I struggle with folded axe eye welds and I use a coke forge. Usually have to start a new piece at least once for every other axe I make. Forge welding the eye is difficult.
